Description The goal of this study is to understand how the metabolic potential of microbial communities shift across hydrothermal gradients, from the source (subsurface microbial communities represented by hydrothermal diffuse flow) to the sink (microbial communities inhabiting the hydrothermal plume) and the role viruses play in altering the metabolic potential and activity of microbes living in these ecosystems
