Description The rumen microbiome mediates the conversion of plant lignocellulosic materials into ruminant products such as meat, milk and fibre. These conversions are also part of larger global carbon cycling processes, and understanding how they occur in the rumen will contribute to the goals of generating alternative fuels from lignocellulosic substrates and to reducing methane emissions from ruminant animals. Identifying the types of microbial genes that encode these processes and understanding how they are expressed are the aims of this study.
