Description Lake Tanganyika is the oldest and deepest tropical lake in the world, and its organic-rich sediments offer a model system for paleoclimatology and petrochemical formation. It is meromictic, and its sharp redox transition is believed to have been maintained for millions of years, creating a globally-unique opportunity for microbial adaptation in a stable, isolated ecosystem with steep chemical gradients and high productivity year-round. This study provides an opportunity to profile microbial diversity and uniqueness in an ancient rift lake that has locked away vast quantities of organic carbon over millions of years.
