Description The manipulation of root associated microbes has the potential to drive increased yield potential through numerous mechanisms. In this project the development of microbial probiotics to improve plant productivity and stress tolerance will be aided by the discovery of microbial strains and consortia that are active across plant taxa. In addition to core members of a root microbiome, there may be unique members that are likely to arise due to different features of the site-specific soil communities, specific edaphic conditions (e.g., low water availability or low nutrient availability), and plant species-specific root exudates. These unique or specific contributions to the root microbiome will need to be considered in defining effective plant probiotic strains and consortia for sorghum.
