Description When metagenomic reads are recruited against reference genomes from the same environment, it is often found that long regions of high sequence identity are interrupted by regions where recruitment is poor or absent. Known as ‘hypervariable regions’ (HVRs) these genomic islands are hypothesised to play a major role in influencing the evolution of bacteria. The goal of the study is to combine new sequencing technologies like ONT, SCG and metagenomics to produce the first detailed evaluation of HVR heterogeneity within populations of bacteria from complex communities.
