Description Terrestrial deep shales are carbon-rich environments that are a significant component of the U.S. energy portfolio. Moreover these systems represent a poorly sampled microbial frontier, as most research into deep terrestrial life was conducted prior to the advent of high-throughput genomic sequencing. However, recent advances in energy extraction from these environments offer a unique opportunity to study these ecosystems prior to and following energy extraction disturbances.
