STUDY DESCRIPTION
PI Lynne Goodwin
Description TA major goal of the Subsurface Biogeochemical Research program (SBR) is to understand the factors controlling the transport behavior of contaminants in the subsurface and the mechanisms of contaminant transformation. For microbially catalyzed processes, such as in situ uranium bioremediation, this requires an understanding not only of which microorganisms are present in the subsurface, but also the rates of microbial metabolism and the environmental factors controlling those rates. GTL and Genomic Science Programs to date have mainly focused on a few microbial genera in the remediation of metal, acid and nuclear contaminated sites (Geobacter and Shewanella). Based on their ability to reduce a variety of metals including U(VI) and V(V) (5, 6, 57), Geobacter species have become model microorganisms for DOE?s interests.
