Description
|
Subseafloor sediments represent one of the largest reservoirs for microbial life and carbon on the planet that are essential for biogeochemical nutrient cycling. The Guaymas Basin sediments are located in the Gulf of California and are hydrothermally influenced by volcanic dikes that transform the deposited carbon into complex petroleum hydrocarbons, low-molecular weight organic acids and ammonia. Additionally, these sediments are characterized by high methane concentrations; therefore, anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is one characteristic metabolic process of Guaymas Basin sediments carried out by anaerobic methanotrophic (ANME). Another typical feature of this location is the presence of dense bacterial mats on the sediment surface, consisting of the filamentous, sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Beggiatoa. This study involves sequencing samples from the Guaymas Basin sediment cores that cover a range of depths from 0-40 cm with different geochemical profiles and temperature regimes.
