This organism harbors a clade II nitrous oxide reductase, which is hypothesized to function as the nitrous oxide sink in the environment. Thus, this organism has great potential to be utilized in development of nitrous oxide removal technology. Nitrous oxide is a very potent greenhouse gas and an ozone depleting agent that can have serious consequences to the environment if released to the atmosphere in large quantity.
