Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) in the phylum Nitrospirae able to form hundreds of intracellular bullet-shaped magnetite magnetosomes per cell are widespread in aquatic environments and play important roles in global iron cycling. Analyses of the genome sequence of "Candidatus Magnetobacterium casensis" provide important novel insights into the physiology and magnetosome biosynthesis of MTB belonging to the poorly understood Nitrospirae phylum. The genomic information presented here may also help guide cultivation efforts and provide essential knowledge to elucidate the function and ecology for this organism.
