Lawsonia intracellularis is the causative agent of proliferative enteropathy, a disease which causes a mild, or acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea in animals resulting in poor growth or death. Strain N343 was isolated from the ileum of a sow that died of haemorrhagic diarrhoea.
