An important bacterial genus containing species of ecological, biotechnological, and pathogenic interest. These bacteria present great versatility to adapt to diverse environments, and are capable of degrading pollutants in water and soil, and fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Several Burkholderia species show potential as agricultural biocontrol agents and in bioremediation of contaminated water and soil. Some are known opportunistic pathogens in humans and animals. Unlike other plant-associated Burkholderia species, PVA does not form root nodules but enters the root by infection. This organism will be used for comparative analysis with the nodule-forming Burkholderia.
