Project Description
Understand the evolution of Vibrio fischeri and the role of symbioses in the ecological success of marine bacteria. Vibrios are common and abundant in the specific microbial communities associated with marine animals where they influence their hosts in important ways, either as coevolved beneficial symbionts or by causing diseases such as coral bleaching. These Vibrio-host interactions appear to play a critical role in the survival and dissemination of these bacteria in the marine environment. Comparisons of pathogenic and symbiotic strains have suggested that bacterial traits generally associated with virulence may have been evolved to promote marine symbioses. On the other hand, interpreting the dissimilarities between these genomes is more difficult, as they reflect both lifestyle differences and the evolutionary distance inherent in diverged species. By obtaining the genome sequences of six additional strains of V. fischeri, representing a diversity of distinct niches and evolutionary histories, be able to determine which genomic traits are common to all strains of this species as well as those that may underlie important adaptations to specific lifestyles.
