Project Description
SI85-9A1 is a Mn(II) oxidizing bacterium. Isolated from Saanich Inlet (B.C. Canada) and Black Sea oxic/anoxic interfaces, hydrothermal plumes on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and off of the surface of Alvinella pompejana worms at 9 degrees North on the East Pacific Rise. DNA extraction from cultures is difficult (see Caspi et al ref), so may not turn up in clone libraries due to DNA extraction bias. SI85-9A1 has unusual RuBISCo genes, involved in carbon fixation but the growth conditions for gene expression unclear. Transcript (mRNA) of a RuBISCo gene most closely related to this organism has been detected as one of the major RuBISCo transcripts from natural assemblages of microbes from the euphotic zone (see Pichard et al ref).
