Project Description
Methanosaeta, the predominant methane producer on earth, has received little attention in recent years due to its slow growth and difficulties in culturing. Therefore, the genome sequence is a valuable source of information about this microbe and offers the most tractable approach to understanding its physiology. Furthermore, the genome sequence of Methanosaeta concilii GP-6 significantly increases our knowledge of the role of acetate-utilizing methanoarchaea in the global carbon cycle, and also allows for a more complete comparative genomics analysis of methanogenic archaea as now both genera of aceticlastic methanoarchaea are now represented.
