Description The goal of this study is to identify the molecular basis underpinning one of the most ancient and ubiquitous examples of symbiosis - between plants and certain fungal species, some of which host endohyphal bacteria, a presumably ancient fungal-bacterial symbiosis. These data will provide an evolutionary and functional metatranscriptomic perspective on tri-partite mutualisms that is currently lacking in single and binary species investigations, and will shed new light on plant microbiomes and the role of endohyphal bacteria in tripartite multi-trophic interactions.
