Study Abstract Eight sterol-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from five marine sponge species after enrichment with cholesterol as growth substrate. Isolated strains include one Mycobacterium sp. strain and seven Cellvibrionales strains from the oligotrophic marine gammaproteobacteria (OMG) group. The latter are the first proteobacteria reported to degrade complex sterols such as cholesterol, sitosterol and ergosterol using the aerobic 9,10-seco steroid degradation pathway
