Project Description
N. nitrogenifigens is a novel nitrogen-fixing obligate aerobe that accumulates the bioplastic polyhydroxybutyrate in quantities of up to 80% of total cell mass. The organism occurs naturally in low nitrogen, high carbon waste streams such as pulp mill effluent. Proteomic analysis of N. nitrogenifigens has revealed at least one novel gene that is specifically induced only during nitrogen fixation.
