Project Description
This species is a food and waterborn pathogen that causes gastroenteritis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and intestine) and is able to proliferate at temperatures as low as 4 C. This species is comprised of nonpathogenic strains and pathogenic strains that exclusively contain the plasmid pCD1/pYv. The latter are further subdivided into high and low pathogenic serotypes dependent on the presence or absence of an iron uptake system. DSMZ strain no. 13030 (Y11) Yersiniosis is the third most common bacterial enteric disease in Europe and Yersinia enterocolitica subsp. palearctica O:3/4 is the most common bioserotype isolated from humans and asymptomatic slaughter pigs in Europe, Northern Asia and Australia. Thus, deciphering of Yersinia enterocolitica subsp. palearctica O:3/4 genome will help to uncover the mechanisms behind is host adaptation strategy and successful worldwide dissemination.
