Project Description
Dehalogenating microorganism, Dehalobium chlorocoercia DF-1 - finally isolated after a 5 year effort. Extensive probing of marine sediments from sites ranging from North America to Antarctica with 16S rRNA gene primers specific for Dehalobiuma-like species indicates that these microorganisms represents a large and diverse phylogenetic group of undescribed dechlorinating species that are ubiquitous in the marine environment. Sequence data needed to determine the role of these microorganisms in the marine halogen cycle. Biogenic sources of organohalides in the marine environment include hemichordates, algae, sponges and fungi. Volcanic emissions and other pyrogenic activity also have been shown to be anatural source of organohalides including chlorinated dioxins, biphenyls and benzenes.
