This organism is a pear-shaped bacterium having a life cycle consisting of an aggregate-forming sessile (non-motile) form and a motile swarmer cell. They have a pirellulosome, a large nucleoid-containing cellular compartment, which is surrounded by a single membrane. Rhodopirellula baltica strain SH28 has been isolated from Kiel Fjord, part of the Baltic Sea, Germany and will be used for comparative genome analysis.
